About

The Children’s Express/Y-Press Legacy Project is all about one thing --- saving our story.

You’ve been asked to save the whales, save the rain forests and save monuments. But you have never been asked to save the stories you told.

This effort preserves 24 years of reporting -- articles, photos, interviews and projects -- that you painstakingly produced as reporters and editors of Children’s Express and Y-Press.

You may have been involved for one year or spent your entire teen years writing and reporting from the field. But if you were a member of one of the only news bureaus in the country that was run by young people and published in mainstream news outlets, you know the significance it had on your life. Your parents and friends do, too.

This project will preserve the collection of our work at the Indiana Historical Society for current and future generations. This project will share our story that was never told in a 30-minute documentary on WFYI and its network stations statewide. And this project will also enable Indiana teachers to use our stories in their classrooms as a vehicle to engage and empower students.

Your help is imperative now. Lilly Endowment has awarded 60 percent of the project’s funds, and your support will leverage more donations.

Here is what your contribution will do:
  • Show funders across Indiana that the Children’s Express/Y-Press community values this project and its legacy.
  • Provide a critical component of the project budget.
  • Honor the work of young Hoosiers who produced professional journalism on under-reported youth issues.
We reached our $10,000 goal, but now we want to reach for the title sponsorship.  If we reach the $15,000 goal, the CE/YP community will featured in the documentary credits and on all the project’s components.

Help us tell our story.
While most CE/Y-Press alumni don't have checkbooks, parents and friends may. If you are interested in contributing by check, it should be made to the Indiana Historical Society (our fiscal sponsor), Fund #599, and mailed to Lynn Sygiel @ 3946 N. Delaware St./46205. Donations made by check will be counted in the campaign total.  All donations (by check or on Deposit a Gift) are tax-deductible!

Thank you for your support,
Mallory St. Claire, Laurann Rodriguez and Robert Hornberger, Y-Press alumni
